In 2009 The Lowry successfully applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop a large-scale project focusing on The Lowry’s immediate surroundings on Salford Quays. The docks are at the heart of the history of the City of Salford and, because of its economic and industrial role over the past century, at the heart of Salford communities. This heritage is hidden, however, with little visible evidence of the historical significance of the area. WHY? Unlocking Salford Quays aims to bring this heritage back into focus by engaging with people who worked on or lived near the docks before they closed in 1982, plus current Quays school and youth groups, families, businesses and residents. WHEN? Having submitted a representation of our work so far, we await decision from the Heritage Lottery Fund concerning further funding. If successful, the project will move into its second phase in March 2010, which will see particpants work collaboratively with artists to develop a piece of public art to form part of a heritage trail on Salford Quays. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? Unlocking Salford Quays is entirely dependent on the involvement of people who have a connection with the Quays. If you live, have lived or work on Salford Quays that means you!
